Ok it was a problem with my TCL QM8B I have now got a TCL Q9BK and it worked first time without a hitch and the image looks fantastic.

Thanks for your help and thanks for a great piece of software.

Do you know what the issue was with the QM8B?

Sorry I don't but I think it might be firmware related.

Ok - I've asked TCL if they have any info on that model.

Hi there !
TCL C855 eastern europe
I just installed a week ago (big mistake), the latest firmware version V8-0012T01-LF1V509 in short v509 and I notice that there are problems with the image, especially with Dolby Vision. Before the update, everything looked perfect, but there are problems with Oversaturation and Posterization, especially with skin tones in semi-dark / darknest movies environments or artificial light. I tried changing the brightness, contrast, gamma and other settings, but it doesn't solve much. The same problem with Filmmaker mode. Does anyone know if a newer firmware version is on the way for Eastern Europe and if it solves the image problems? At the moment, Dolby Vision does not support compatibility with Filmmaker mode. The tv has not been and is not calibrated

Sorry, but you really will want to contact TCL directly, as this is a forum for Light Illusion software users who wish to calibrate their sets, and not for general display issues. There are other forums far more suited to this kind of inquiry.

hi Steve -

I saw your comment that "As the TV is a FALD it is usual to use full screen patterns." curious if that is for SDR only or both SDR and HDR, in your opinion of course? I've done a lot of messing about on my TCL with different window sizes, backgrounds, etc for HDR and really hitting a wall as I can find one that sits on PQ incredibly well (10% on black for example) but doesn't translate well to real content imo or one that feels more visually pleasing (larger window on mid gray bg) but does not look great in charts. In your experience with this type of panel, and I know this is all down to everyone to experiment, but what have you found as your preference to work with in terms of window size and bg when balancing grayscale in HDR?

Unfortunately, with FALD displays there is no answer.
In reality, it just down t personal preference.
You cannot chase a technically accurate calibration.

Steve

Completely fair and I appreciate the honesty.

I'm definitely not looking for a "technically correct" answer where one doesn't exist, and I understand why that line can't really be drawn with FALD. I've come to that conclusion myself after quite a bit of trial-and-error across different window sizes, backgrounds, and LD states, and seeing firsthand how differently graphs and real content can behave ha

If you don't mind me reframing slightly: when you personally work with FALD LCDs, do you find HDR behaves more predictably when approached more like SDR (larger or full-field patterns), or do you still tend to anchor HDR grayscale with some form of windowed pattern and accept the translation variance?

Even a high-level "I usually lean toward X in practice" would be helpful context; not as guidance, just perspective.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I would personally go full screen for FALD.
But that's just my preference.
