Colorimetry Research CR-100 improvements with ColourSpace

The present ColourSpace Beta update has advanced CR-100 probe 'Intelligent Integration' option added.

This again enhances the already impressive accuracy of the CR-100 probe, especially in low-light readings.

Intelligent integration sets a threshold nits value, below which the CR-100 will start with the set Exposure Time and Exposure Multiplier, and then increase the values in repetitive readings until a stable value is read, up to the absolute maximum total integration time.

This means the probe actually takes an accurate reading, and doesn't just average out a number of bad readings.

Steve
Hi Steve, me again.
Sorry for bringing this thread back after so long, but I'm trying to better understand how to use Intelligent Integration (I.I.) for my CR-100 calibrations.

Am I correct in thinking that Intelligent Integration is a Light Illusion feature and not part of the Colorimetry Research API/SDK?
If so, does that mean the threshold value I set is based purely on the expected patch luminance rather than an actual luminance reading from the probe?
Or does the probe take a reading first and, if the measured luminance is below the threshold, continue integrating on that same patch until the reading stabilises—regardless of the patch's intended output level?

Also, from your explanation of Intelligent Integration, am I right in assuming that I can leave the CR-100 in Auto Range with, for example, a 200 ms Max Auto Exposure and an Exposure Multiplier of 1 to keep profiling fast... but any patch below the I.I. threshold will still be measured at the probe's maximum possible integration time (which I believe is 20 seconds), independent of my Max Auto Exposure and Exposure Multiplier settings?

Sorry if my question is a bit confused — I'm confused myself because I can't quite understand why the CR-100 uses a combination of integration time and exposure multiplier in the first place, rather than simply offering a wider range for integration time alone. And I think my math may be off: if 500 ms is the maximum integration time and 50x is the maximum exposure multiplier, why would the maximum total integration time be 20 seconds instead of 25 seconds?

Yes, Intelligent Integration is a ColourSpace function, which is why it works with different probes.
The threshold you set is triggered by the measured value.
So if an initial reading is below that threshed, the Int. Int. kicks in.
(This is explained in the User Guides.)

As for the CR operational options, you would need to ask CR those questions, other than saying yes, you can leave them as you suggest.

Great stuff, thanks a lot for the explanation Steve. Sorry I did read the user guides, I just wanted to be 100% sure I had read correctly.

Down below my question to Guillermo Keller at Colorimetry Research with his reply):

I've read through the CR-100 user guide, but I'm still not clear on how the exposure multiplier works. Why do we need both an integration time (up to 500 ms) and an exposure multiplier (up to 50×) to control the effective exposure? Wouldn't it be simpler to just have a single integration-time value that goes up to 20 seconds?

Using a long integration time has some drawbacks that are hard to correct in small, compact electronic designs. The exposure multiplier is used in a proprietary algorithm that improves the signal-to-noise ratio more than simple averaging and more than longer integration times.

Hope this will help some more users of the forum.
