How do we see Raw footage that has not been debayered?

If Raw footage has to be debayerd before it can be discernible to the human eye, then how is it possible to see the footage live on set while shooting in raw with Red, Phantom or Alexa?

I mean, we have instant playback capabilities on set, but debayering and transcoding raw footage to a useable codec is very time consuming, so how can is it being done on the fly?

I'm referring to an interesting article I read on Cine Technica, May 17, 2012. In the article, it shows an image of an actual raw file, which is just a jumble of colors and pixels and completely indiscernible.

Because all cameras have a 'down and dirty' real-time debayering capability built into the camera body.
This is not a full quality debayering, as is later done in post, but is more than good enough for on-set use.

However, real-time high quality debayering is easily possible. Mistika does this at the highest quality for Red, Alexa, etc, in real-time, in software, with no additional hardware.
