We've been asked a number of times for our thoughts on the PR relating to the new Mediatek Pentonic chips.
So, we have spoken to a number of different display manufacturers that already use MTK ships to get their input.

It would appear the PR from Calman is ready is just marketing spin...

The manufacturers we spoke to state that there is really nothing new in the capabilities of the Pentonic chip, other than bit-depth processing; the possibility that there is an internal TPG in the new chip that can be made available via a 3rd party App; and that DDC Autocal (automated manual adjustment) may be openly available so that different manufacturer using the chips can use the same DDC controls, but the information has not yet been provided to the TV manufacturers.

However, as has been proven time and again, issues with Autocal means it takes longer than a manual calibration to complete.

MediaMarkt, Sweden, who swapped to ColourSpace from Calman, dropped their average customer calibration time from an hour+ to less than 20 minutes.)

The more interesting information is that all existing MTK chips already have LUT capability, etc., within them, but few TV manufacturers have opened-up access to 3rd party calibration, and just use the LUTs within their own factory configuration.
We know this to be true, as TCL have opened access to the LUTs in existing MTK chips as part of the development work we are doing with them: https://www.lightillusion.com/tcl_manual.html

Access to any LUT capabilities in the new chips will therefore still require the specific display manufacturers to provide external access for any calibration system, exactly as is the case now.

Additionally, HDR calibration has not been improved, and is still power-law based, and described by one manufacturer as 'pseudo relative HDR calibration...'.
That is unfortunate, as the Increased Resolution PQ LUT calibration workflow developed by Light Illusion would be a far better approach, and is openly available to all to implement.
