Affordable spectro?

Hello,

I recently purchased the LTE license and calibrated some display. I used a couple of iD3 and they gave varied result as expected.

I looked into the issues, and like a moth to a flame, it seems that getting a spectro is the next logical step.

But the "endgame" combo of CR-100/250 and license upgrade is just too steep. I was talking to some friend and one of them recommended the Hopoo OHSP-350L
https://www.hopoocolor.com/product/detail/luminance-meter.html

If what I understand is correct, the LTE license could allow me to probe match manually. (Although I am still figuring out how to do it atm.)

Before I make any move, I wonder:-
1. If the Hopoo OHSP-350L is a good enough spectrometer? (How do I even read the spec, and verify it's competency in real life?)
2. Assume the above is true, is this direction probable?

Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

You can use any Spectro for probe matching - you just have to manually enter the WRGB measured values into the Probe Match window.
We have never seen/used any Hopoo probe, so cannot make any specific comments.

That meter is sold by vendors on Amazon for roughly $2450 USD. Pictures on Amazon and the manufacturer's website show either a microUSB or multipin round connector similar to a PC mouse port. Amazon shows the microUSB.

I checked and it looks like an old school microUSB.

I will most definitely invest in one when I can.

The manufacturer is selling them direct to consumers on AliExpress for USD $2399. If you aren't affected by the current tariff wars, that may be another option for you.

Definitely. Yet it would be a couple months before I am able to get one.
Will report back when I have it.

I also have the 'OHSP-350L' on my consideration list as an attainable hi-rez spectro option for an AV enthusiast.
However, it came to mind some concerns - what about when it's time to recalibrate the instrument, how long will it take and how expensive will it be?
Also to begin with, how sure can we be that the quoted performance metrics are indeed accurate and within tolerance?

Having thought more about it, I am more drawn to purchasing the Admesy Hera for a few key reasons:
1) We can purchase it through Light Illusion and the device itself is well integrated into the ColourSpace software.
2) It has even better performance and we can be confident in the accuracy of its spec sheet.
3) Recalibration / certification is possible within Europe.
4) Industrial build quality / ruggedness.

The obvious negative is that the Admesy while overall better, is again more expensive at £4000.
Eventually I intend to treat myself to either one, but I feel that patience may pay off to buy the more expensive unit.

There is another "low cost" spectro to consider, the HP350L. Its manufacturer advertises it with roughly the same specs as the OHSP350L, but somewhat better in a couple of metrics. It is available for just under $2000 USD. The same questions mentioned by @Nx87 would also apply with this unit.

Full integration in Colourspace would be great information. But it takes time and the willingness of the software manufacturer. The quality/cost combination pushes us to make a smart choice.

that looks more sketchy than the Hopoo, i hope someone tests it so we can know if we finally have a good and cheap hiRez spectro.

Just received a message and don't know where to reply to. But to answer the question, indeed I talked with the salesperson and they offered a good discount indeed. Albeit it's tax season and I need to pay off some purchase and production fee first, gonna live on that dE 0.7 for a while.

Until then, wish all you guys a great day.

I'm having trouble entering the probe data. The brightness data is entered, but the x and y data are not entered, even by confirming "enter" or by selecting another data entry field. I am attaching a link to the video.

Perhaps you have the I1D3 inadvertently selected, or another setup error? I notice that it is showing a serial number appropriate for an I1D3 in the box at the top, and if you are just entering data manually for the spectro, that probably shouldn't be the case.

A new device profile has been created and data is being entered. As Steve wrote, we can enter device data that does not interact with the Colorspace calibration program. And in fact, we can enter brightness data, but it doesn't work for x and y. Either this is a bug of the version or a local problem.
