ColorChecker/i1D3 Rev-A vs. Rev-B (& Rev-C?)

We have noticed an interesting variation on the low-light capabilities of the ColorChecker/i1D3 Rev-A vs. Rev-B when using the latest ColourSpace releases, with the new probe integration...

Some time back there was some speculation that the Rev-B probes were not as good in the low-lights as the previous Rev-A variants.

The new ColourSpace integration Seems to prove this is actually true, as a number of direct comparisons show the Rev-A probes produce significantly better low-light readings than the Rev-B variants.

Something for those with access to both variants of the ColorChecker/i1D3 to test for themselves.

We do now actually understand what is happening, and what, um, err, well, 'stuff' is done to try to mitigate the issue with other integrations...

While the issue is often seen in low-light readings, it can actually happen in any highly saturated patches, especially red.

What we are going to do with ColourSpace integration is still debatable, as ColourSpace actually generates better, more accurate LUTs when the Rev-B and later probes provide the correct, zero value, readings for such problematic patches, due to the advanced error handling of the Colour Engine in ColourSpace.

But, when performing manual calibration that is not really what is wanted...

So, we are likely to add our own 'workaround', that hopefully will be better than the alternative options.

We have a Beta Release available with changes to the ColorChecker/i1D3 integration, including support for the new ColorChecker/i1D3 Rev-C versions, as well as with Multi-Threading LUT Generation for the higher license levels, and a tweak to the RGB Bars Widget operation.

The Beta Release is available to anyone that requests access via email.

@Steve

If one has to buy a new Calibrite Display Colorimeter for TV and computer monitor calibrations, which model do you recommend? Would it be the PRO HL or PLUS HL or the SL? Besides the marketing fluff, is there any proper comparison against a better meter like K-10A to state which one of these Calibrite meters are better for ColorSpace users?

Thanks,
Amit

We do not recommend any specific models of anything.
The choice is for the user to define, based on their specific requirements.
But yes, you basically get what you pay for.

I understand that as a company you do not want to endorse, promote or demote any 3rd party product.

Has your team done an y technical analysis of these models that can be shared for a customer like mine to make a decision? Like what is the low level limits of each of the models and at what probe settings in ColorSpace they will work to these low levels. Similarly, what are their upper limits compared the marketed information your team is able to verify. I understand that does not mean that the marketing claim in wrong, it is not something your team was able to see these meter achieve. Lastly, how well is their error rate or measurement repeatability for taking readings.

The challenge for a home user doing DIY stuff and playing with calibration is that the colorimeter probes don't have any middle ground. There are these cheap probes and then there are really expensive probes like K-10A or CR-100/200. Jumping to these professional probes also requires a huge jump in ColorSpace license version as these probes are only supported in the top two versions of the software.

Am I missing something i.e. is there something in the middle?

Unfortunately, there is nothing in the middle...

And no, we do not provide any test information for low-end probes.
They can vary too much, which I guess is why the manufacturers do not even provide low-end specifications...

The higher-end probes are as per the manufacturer specifications.
