I am looking at few options for a near field monitor for color grading with Resolve.
I have a Panasonic PF20 50" for client, that I'm planning to set up either with HDLink Pro SDI to HDMi or, as suggested by my calibrator, with Component Input, but these ones are my favorite options as far as 23-25" monitors (under $6K)

Eizo ColorEdge CG275W (with HDLink Pro?)

Flanders Scientific lm-2461w (HD-SDI) "comes with 12 mode scopes"

Sony PVM-2541 OLED (HD-SDI) "is OLED a technology that will last for years?"

Eizo ColorEdge CG232 (HD-SDI) "beautiful, a little too small"


Ideally Ii'd like to be able to grade in P3 and create DCP, but likely there will be a lot of REC.709 work finalized for broadcast.
I am really torn about which monitor to go for. Can you please bring some light in and share your wisdom?

Any opinions?

Hi Daniele, please see the HDlink Pro thread first... then the Plasma thread... (not that you are using plasmas for grading)

As for the displays, I do not use any display with in-built calibration, as they have proven to rarely be accurate.
We are working with Penta on their calibration, where they will directly use LightSpace for full display calibration.

Alternatives are to use a good external LUT box, but that can get expensive - Davio and Pluto are the ones that really do work, and we are working with the manufacturers of the eeColor box to get that accurately functional too.

I'm also not a fan of OLEDs as they do not represent what the final image will be viewed on...

Does anyone know a DCI-conform 3-chip-dlp for a small suite below 30TEUR?

So far I found projection design's F82. Trying for weeks now to get one for a quick profiling.

... look at the low end NEC/Kristie projectors... they might have some for the low end..

like those:

see if the price is in the range you're looking for, but 30.000 EUR is a good amount of change for a good projector!

Ask Kristie or NEC for a refurbished one: the DLP technology is a really good one and you might find a good projector for half price with 10000 hours of life left.

Or in alternative, ask for the Theater models (exhibition, non DI): is the SAME model of the big boy, but the tolerance for the filter/convergence or whatnot is just a little loose. Still a great way to build a DI suite at reduced cost.

Does using a projector for HD make sense? I am in a similar situation as OP. We have evaluated Penta which right now is the front runner.

When you say HD do you mean for TV projects? HD can just as easily be for film work...

If for TV, then no, I would recommend a monitor display, not a projector.

Have you looked at the Flanders Scientific thread???
That could be a very good option now that they have fully integrated LightSpace CMS.

I just love Penta that has been mentioned before. LS nicely integrates wo any external box. 5-6 k € but still. I plan to get me one of these.

In theory the finishing in 709 for cinema would be ok, but here even mixing stages have big barco dci projectors.

The refurbished ones, will all be xenon kilo watt devices. Too big for my suite.

Still hoping for the digital projection.
