Probe matching to a high-end colourimeter

Hi Steve,

I'm a DIT working with rental monitors every week and looking for a simple way to calibrate monitors on set or during prep (when rental doesn't provide such service). The Sony PVM-A250 and SmallHD Oled series are the monitors I'm working the most with. We often have very little time for calibration during prep (especially for commercials). Also, monitors often come back from shoots with totally messed up settings because of users not caring about calibration. This, and also the high amount of projects every day, are the reasons why the rental company only calibrates the whitepoint and grayscale of monitors (with Sony PVMs as a reference). Although this is a minimum calibration work, they have experience in this domain and work with a Klein K10-A and Chromasurf.

This is for context.

I'd like to purchase a new i1D3 or Display Pro HL (still waiting for feedbacks from the latter to make my choice), and use it for calibration when I have to do the job myself.
I've been reading about probe matching and would like to do it for my future colourimeter but I've only read about matching a colourimeter to a spectroradiometer. I was wondering if it would make sense to match my 250 euros colourimeter to their 6500 euros K10-A ?

Thanks,

Jérôme.

No - matching a tristimulus to another tristimulus never makes sense.
You will be better using a Correlation File for the monitor in question, with the i1D3.

And using a K10-A without it also being matched to a spectro can also be worse...

Thanks for your light-fast reply !

I've downloaded this pack of correlation files : https://www.displaycalibrations.com/machform/view.php?id=31818 .

As no file for the Sony PVM-A250 is included, is it ok to use the one for the Sony PVM-2541 ?

Jérôme.

You need to use a Correlation File with the same backlight/screen as the monitor you are calibrating.

Also, as any reputable hire company must have a good spectro, ask them to generate the needed Correlation File - it is very simple, as defined on the i1D3 page of the website.
