LG31mu97 calibration thoughts?

Hey guys,
Im fairly new to this and have been doing quite a bit of research, however I'm a bit more confused than when I started my research lol...

I have an LG 31mu97 (claims to get 99.5% Adobe RGB and 97% DCI-P3) hooked up via Displayport 1.2 to a 2009 Mac Pro with a Titan X which gives me DCI 4k @ 60hz.

I plan on grading a feature film in the very near future as soon as I get my setup in order.

Questions:
-Has anyone here calibrated this monitor? I seem to have found some pre setup issues, such as, the brightness control seems to be a backlight control as oppose a way to adjust blacks.
-In order to calibrate this monitor, do I need an external LUT box, or some sort of card or decklink?
-Would it be best to calibrate the monitor in something like REC709, do my grade in Resolve in REC709, and then export in my desired color space, such as DCI-P3?
-Or would it be best to calibrate the monitor to what ever Color space I plan on grading?
-Or is my only option with my current setup to calibrate with something like lightspace and an i1 display pro, and create LUTS for use within resolve?

Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron,

With LG displays you will never get a viable calibration without the use of a 3D LUT.
But, there are few 4K LUT boxes available, with the FSI BoxIO being the only really viable one.
See: http://www.lightillusion.com/boxio_lut_box.html

This really means using the output LUT capability of resolve would be an obvious way to perform the calibration, as many users do already.

As for the actual calibration - Rec709, or DCI P3, you really need to profile the display with a suitable probe and LightSpace CMS to see what it is really capable of, and then define your best workflow.

If the display really can get close to 100% P3, that may be viable.
But, a Rec709 calibration, with a LUT to convert to P3 after the work will always be 100% accurate.

I hope that helps.

Looks like I would only get 30hz at 4K with a single FSI BoxIO, I would potentially need 2 in order to get 60hz correct? would it then be a better choice to get a Eizo ColorEdge CG248-4K 23.8 or another monitor that can handle LUTS internally? If I calibrate the monitor to REC709, I wouldn't need a lut box correct? Grade in 709, then output in dci using resolves built in luts?
