i1D3 + i1Pro2 for a Projector calibration

Hello all,

I am wondering if a x-Rite Display Pro i1D3 matched to a i1Pro2 would be the minimum acceptable to get acceptable results calibrating a projector, namely the JVC D-ILA N5 (not a laser projector), or if conversely the i1D3 is not meant for projectors at all and should be used only for monitors.

I have been getting different opinions on this matter
(obviously this only for the time being, ideally we invest on a CR-100).

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Any colourimeter can be used on any display technology.
That includes the 1iD3.
But the i1Pro is not a 'good' spectro, as it is 10nm.
You may do better using a compatible Corr. File.

Hi Steve,
This is a good tip, I checked the and I saw now that you have added support for the JVC NP5 which is great.

"Note: Correlation files should not be relied on for calibration accuracy, as they apply a relative correction to the i1D3's underlying factory calibration, not an absolute correction, meaning the underlying accuracy of the i1D3 is not improved. This can be seen specifically with Y measurements.
The use of Probe Matching to a Spectro is always recommended, using ColourSpace's unique probe matching capabilities."

If I understand correctly this, you mean that 1iD3 + correlation file will not be an accurate calibration, but will still be better than matching the 1iD3 to the i1Pro2?

Unfortunately, that's impossible to answer, without having a high-end spectro available to compare the i1Pro vs. the Corr. File, on your specific display...

Thanks for the prompt answer,

And the correlation file specifically for the JVC D-ILA NP5 is based on lamp at high, with manual aperture at maximum? And projector levels legal / extended / full? Is there a way to check those important details?

Such info, if available, is often part of the Corr. File name.
But for Corr. Files, such settings are really irrelevant..
(Same with Probe Matching.)
The different settings do not really alter the characteristics of the projector.
But, screen material might, as well as the filter being on/off.
As will different i1D3 probes themselves.
It's all part of the variability of the whole 'Corr. File' workflow, as you can see on the iD3 User Guide page.

Last question to close the i1Pro2 question, would you use it to calibrate our FSI DM 241 monitors, or that`s also a bad path to follow, and we should rather stay away from the i1Pro2 and stick to the i1D3 + the matrices provided by FSI

As mentioned above, that is basically impossible to answer.
Without having a high-end spectro available to compare the i1Pro vs. the Corr. File, on your specific display it is impossible to know what is more accurate...
