For those of us living in the USA, there is a company doing calibration of video test instruments, Color Calibration Group. Among the wide variety of instruments they claim to be able to calibrate are the I1 Pro and I1Pro 2. Some of us inhabiting the video forums have understood for some time now thanks to Ted Aspiotis that only XRite could do calibration on these instruments, that anything else was just a check to ensure they met specifications. Now that the Pro spectros (and possibly Pro 2) are EOL and XRite will no longer maintain them, this company may be an option. They don't list the Pro 3, the current model, so pehaps XRite has licensed them to work on the earlier ones.
I have no connection with them. I just happened to find their site during a Google search this morning.

The i1Pro range have never been 'recalibratable', if that is a word...
They could only be 'recertified' as still being accurate.

All those years ago, Ted indicated that XRite were the only ones with the capability to write to the device's EEPROM. In case of an internal light or other component replacement during repairs, this might even be necessary.
I was just surprised to see the I1 Pros mentioned at all.

From my experience/understanding, if an i1Pro failed recertification a replacement was offered that was still within specification.
At a cost.
But, it has been a long time since I dealt with i1Pro recertification...

Understood, Steve. I just wanted the folks here to know there might be an option for these meters.

Fully understand.
But would be good to verify with this company what they actually do with their 'calibration' of instruments...
A quick read of their website makes no mention of NIST certification, or the use of a certified illumination source, etc.
Just talks of cleaning things, and issuing their own certificate.

X-Rite was re-certifying the i1PRO1/2 for Reflectance mode.

In Reflectance mode, the i1PRO uses its internal tungsten lamp to illuminate the object, which is typically the color on printed paper. After illuminating the object, the i1PRO analyzes the reflected light.

When measuring a display or projector that has its own illumination, the meter operates in Emissive mode, and the internal lamp is not used.

The i1PRO is certified, having passed tests with about 25 colored ceramic tiles to ensure accuracy in Reflectance mode.

However, X-Rite was not re-certified with a NIST document for Emissive mode, although they may have had a method to calibrate the meter for this purpose. Only X-Rite has further information on this.

If they can recalibrate the meter, they must use a CIE Illuminant A source, a laboratory-grade scanning double monochromator, or an integrating sphere, and then verify it using a NIST-certified reference material (CRM) lamp.

I believe this procedure is more expensive than the actual price of the meter.
