Working with large - 256^3 & beyond - LUT sizes

With the introduction of the LUT Generation Size option within higher ColourSpace license levels there have been a few questions on PC specifications that can operate with such huge LUT sizes.

Note: In reality LUT sizes of 65^3 and 128^3 are already well beyond the point of diminishing returns.
The use of 256^3 LUTs really is a very specialised application.


However, most modern PCs are capable of 256^3 LUTs, other than really low power PCs.
For example, we have tested on a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, with i5 CPU 4 Core, 8G RAM, Intel Graphics, which works well.
For the best performance and to minimise memory issues a few settings have to be configured.

  • Turn off all power/energy savings
  • Set for best performance
  • Run plugged-in, not on battery
  • Disable other programs from running at start-up
  • (Do not run other programs while using ColourSpace)
  • Increase paging file size

For VMs running on Mac the VM resources allocations will likely need to be increased.
With an M1 Mac running Windows via VMware Fusion the following works well.

  • 4 processor cores
  • 4096 memory min
  • Plus the same additional configurations as above

With a really low power Microsoft Surface GO 2 no configuration was able to process a 256^3 LUT.
But 235^3 worked with no problem.

The Profile the LUT is being generated from will also have an impact on the PC's power requirements.
If the display has a lot of volumetric issues, and poor gamut coverage, etc., the processing demands made on ColourSpace will obviously be far greater.
The same with the size of the profile (the number of measurement points), as the more points the greater the processing requirements.
(In real life the number of points should never be an issue, as it would take excessively long measurement time to capture them with associated display/probe drift/stability issues, etc.)

Remember that 256^3 LUTs are extremely large, and it will not be possible to work with more than one at a time. For example, do not keep the LUT Generation window open while Uploading 256^3 LUTs.
