TCL TVs

ColourSpace can accurately profile and calibrate TCL TVs with 3D LUT capability.

  • ColourSpace INF/XPT/PRO/CAL/LTE & HTX/HTP/HTL
  • Closed-loop profiling
  • 3D & 1D LUTs
  • High-level accuracy
  • Inbuilt TPG Operation

The following TCL TV models are ColourSpace Integrated:

2022 C73x/C83x/C93x series, 2023 C74xX1/C84xX1 and C74xX2/C84xX2/C80x series, 2024 T8x/C65x/C76x/C85x/C95x/X95x series

Note: Some TCL models are already LUT capable, while others will require new firmware update , and will be provided via an OTA upgrade.

ColourSpace Calibration

Presently, TCL TVs have no internal TPG, so require the use of an external TPG or a direct HTML connection from the ColourSpace PC to enable the use of the inbuilt TPG within ColourSpace.

Additionally, LUT Upload is presently via USB stick.

Initial Setup

  • Connect the TCL TV to the TPG to be used, and start ColourSpace
  • Use the TPG to set the TV into the correct input format - SDR/HDR/HLG/Dolby Vision
  • For HDR ensure the HDR EOTF enable toggle on the TV's GUI is disabled
When performing PQ based HDR calibration, HDR Mode and Dynamic Tone Mapping must also be disabled, as calibration is performed targeting a 2.2 power-law EOTF
  • Select Movie mode, as this is presently the only mode that supports user calibration
For Dolby Vision only DV Dark mode is supported
  • Disable all dynamic TV settings, including Adaptive Brightness, etc., and set Gamma to 0 (zero)
  • To make sure there is no existing calibration data active within the TV use a FAT32 format USB stick to upload the Unity 1D & 3D LUTs, as well as Unity 3x3 Matrix, available via Customer Downloads, replacing xxxx with the TV's correct 4 digit PID value (see below for PID - Project ID - information)
  • Insert the USB Stick into the TV's USB port, and use the remote control to navigate to Picture/Advanced settings/Expert calibration/DDC/Import data

  • The LUT and Matrix uploads will disable the TV's internal colour management, setting the TV to its native colour space for the active input format
Note: Presently for 1D LUTs the # information lines in the file header need to be manually removed
  • Set the TV's Peak Luma using the TV's remote control, while taking ColourSpace measurements via the Manual Measure menu

Before proceeding further, set the correct black and white clipping levels using the TV's remote controls and associated TV GUI. Then set the TV's Peak Luma, again using the TV's remote control, while taking ColourSpace measurements via the Manual Measure menu.
(The desired target value will depend on the accuracy of the white point colour temperature, as well as viewing conditions. For more information review the Calibration Guides, linked below.)

Profiling Operation

Profiling must be performed via a an external patch generator.

Any patch generator can be used for SDR profiling, including direct HDMI/DVI/DisplayPort connection from the ColourSpace laptop, with HDMI to SDI converter if required. For HDR/HLG/Dolby Vision, if applicable, correct metadata may be required within the video signal, requiring a dedicate TPG or metadata injector, unless the display can be manually forced into the required input format.

LUT Upload

After profiling, Calibration 1D and 3D LUTs can be generated as normal within ColourSpace LUT Tools.

Exported LUTs must be named using TCL specific naming convention.

SDR:

  • PIDxxxx_SDR_Movie_POST1D.1tcl
  • PIDxxxx_SDR_Movie_3DLUT.3tcl

HLG:

  • PIDxxxx_HLG_Movie_POST1D.1tcl
  • PIDxxxx_HLG_Movie_3DLUT.3tcl

Note: LUTs generated outside of ColourSpace will not be accurate, due to a quirk with the required TCL data format.

HDR:

  • PIDxxxx_HDR_Movie_POST1D.1tcl
  • PIDxxxx_HDR_Movie_CMS.dat

Note: For PQ based HDR calibration, 3D LUTs are not supported, and the 1D LUT should target a power-law 2.2 EOFT.
To Export the TCL 3x3 Matrix .dat file, select the 3D LUT from within the Manage Spaces Library, and select TCL as the LUT Export Slection, and select [Matrix] MTX21_32bits (.dat) as the file format.

Dolby Vision:

  • PIDxxxx_DV_Movie_POST1D.1tcl
  • PIDxxxx_DV_EndUserCalibration.cfg

Note: For Dolby Vision calibration, 3D LUTs are not supported, and the 1D LUT should target a power-law 2.2 EOTF.
To Export the TCL .cfg file, select the Profile from within the Manage Spaces Library, and select TCL as the Export Selection, and select [Space] TCL CFG (.cfg) as the file format.

For all generated LUTs and files, the PID number (xxxx) must match the TV's Project ID. To check this use the remote to access System/About/Product Information via the TV's menus, and locate the 4 digit Project ID value.

There are two LUT slots available for SDR and HLG calibration, with the 3D LUT used in isolation being the normal configuration to use for display calibration, although the 1D LUT, which is after the 3D LUT, can also be used for calibration if required.

When using both the 1D and 3D LUTs in combination, the 1D LUT can be used to pre-set the TV's greyscale and/or gamma as a first pass, and then the TV can be re-profiled with the 1D LUT active, and the 3D LUT generated from the second profile pass uploaded to the 3D LUT option for the final gamut calibration. The 3x3 Matrix should be left as a null upload, as performed before profiling.

For HDR and Dolby Vision calibration, only the 1D LUT is used, in combination with the 3x3 Matrix file for HDR and DV Config file for Dolby Vision.

With the correct LUTs held within the root location of a FAT32 format USB stick, insert the USB Stick into the TV's USB port, and use the remote control to navigate to Picture/Advanced settings/Expert calibration/DDC/Import data.
Note: Presently for 1D LUTs the # information lines in the file header needs to be manually removed.

Once uploaded, the Calibration data will be updated, and the relevant TV mode will renamed - for example Calibrated Movie.
