Don't believe the marketing hype regarding any i1D3 probe or variant...

... especially regarding i1D3 probes wearing a different paint-job - particularly the gaudy-gold version.

No matter what any hyped-up marketing says, no probe using the same sensor can maintain low-light performance at the same time as extending peak brightness range... Until now! Read more below.

When using i1D3 probes, the best for low-light sensitivity are the models with the lower peak brightness capabilities.
As they all use the same sensor, that should be obvious to anyone.
Extending the peak range always causes the low-light sensitivity to be reduced - all sensors have a finite dynamic range.

However, the unique capabilities of ColourSpace can be used to extend the measurable Dynamic Range of the more black-sensitive low-peak brightness probes to over 5000 nits, while maintaining the probe's inherent low-light sensitivity and colour accuracy throughout the full brightness range, with just the addition of a cheap ND filter.

See the Extended Probe Range info in the Advanced Operation page.

I've just watched one of the Portrait/Calman videos regarding the gaudy-gold C6.
I'm actually saddened, and feel very sorry for David, who I know fairly well from his Avical days, being made to make such comments.

It especially sad to hear the totally inaccurate statements about the previous C6 probes, and the accusations that 'their compactors' played any part in reverse engineering anything to do with them, or that the probes were so good as to warrant such reverse engineering.
All totally false, and deeply saddening.

The ability for any i1d3 to work with ANY 3rd party software had nothing to do with Light Illusion, and certainly had nothing to do with Portrait/Calman either, as they had no involvement in the probe's firmware/software.

It was actually independent users that developed and made available the replacement DLLs that allowed any 3rd party software to work with any i1d3.
Those replacement DLLs actually enabled the i1profiler software to also work with any i1d3, including the C6....
That basically proves this had nothing at all to do with Light Illusion.

And there was/is nothing in any way special about the C6 - any variant - as they are all just i1d3 probes in drag.
As proven when used with any 3rd party software.

The latest bawdy-gold version looks to be exactly the same again, but with some 'Calman' software changes.
They can obviously make whatever claims they want, but users will find out for themselves the actual reality...

Steve, do you have further information/reading about integrating an ND filter into a calibration setup? Filter specifications, ColourSpace setup, etc. Could it benefit the Plus HL, or only the "unaltered" versions? Thanks in advance.

See what he linked to above, in blue. It's there, you just have keep reading to get it all.
Probably not useful with the HL probes, since they already suffer the low light reading deficit, and the ND filter won't help that.

Oops! Guess I had my blinders on. I didn't clock that the following sections were related and not separate topics.

Thank you for answering my question. That's what I figured with the HL. I have one of the late rev. X-Rite branded ones I will experiment with instead.

In the meantime, I use my HL meter combined with an i1 Pro 2 (ES2000) to create an offset before calibration. Do you think this is as effective as the ND filter method? Are there other methods I'm not considering or should be using with this equipment?

Thanks again.

Profiling the colorimeter with a spectro won't change or expand the colorimeter's upper luminance limit at all, so trying to equate that to using an ND filter is comparing apples and oranges.

I suppose what I'm asking is would the Display Plus HL + i1Pro2 or the i1D3 + ND filter + i1Pro2 be a more accurate and/or versatile combination?

The older, non-HL I1D3 should have superior low-light performance.

Hey guys, brand new on here, and also brand new to the calibration world

So the best move right now, if i want to start with something basic, is to go for the Display SL and if i need higher nit capabilities in the future, also buy an ND filter ? Was actually looking to get a colorchecker display plus but it's pretty much impossible to get anywhere in EU, no one sells it anymore.

Would buying Colourspace ZRO be enough for calibrating my Monitors(tn + ips wled ) and an LG CX tv ? I imagine i don't need 3d lut capabilities simply for home use ?

We would recommend ColourSpace HTL for the LG, as you will want to use 3D LUTs for that TV.

Thank you Steve. Is there a huge difference between HTL and LTE ? LTE seems to support more things when it comes to displays, probes ect ?
If i wanted to calibrate a different tv brand, like Sony or Phillips for example, would that still work with the HTL version ?

Philips and Sony have no 3D LUT capability.
Only specific LG and TCL TVs have such capability.
So you would need to either only manually calibrate such TVs, which you can do with any license, or use the output/monitor 3D LUT capability of Resolve, which would need LTE.

The OEM i1Display PRO is 2000 nits, and it's the best meter you can buy.

The EU store of FSI is selling it.

Hey tnx for the link. I just bought the display SL from calibrite, literally got it a few mins ago. I don't need more then 1000 nits atm anyway. Will probably go for ND filters in the future. Now i just need to buy the HTL edition of colourspace and off we go.

@Steve Is the 3D lut calibration guide all i need, or should i read on something more ? I imagine i need to do manual calibration on my PC monitors right ? They are just regular old monitors, so no inbuilt hardware calibration. The inbuilt 3d lut capability of resolve, that only applies when you'r actually using resolve right and not outside of it ?

You can export a 1D LUT (Grayscale + Gamma) for your PC monitors using HTL or LTE and then use SpaceMatch DCM to load in at the startup of your windows.

You will need a SpaceMatch license for each different PC.

However, you can load different 1D LUTs per monitor; in my case, I use 3 GUI monitors on a Windows PC.

For the professional LUT formats (Resolve LUT files or professional LUT boxes or monitors with internal LUT), you will need LTE.

If you don't have a BMD dedicated output card, the 3D LUT in Resolve will load only to your viewer window, not in the GUI menus/interface.

I know a utility that supports the eeColor LUT format (HTL or LTE) or the BMD LUT format (LTE) that can inject it into your Windows. However, I don't know if it still works with the latest Windows release or GPU drivers.
